-Did you use ouija board as a source of inspiration while you worked on the novel?

ROB the STRANGE
Emilyville, CA
Not this time. but i am sure to consult my new Emily Talking Board to help with the next novel we are working on...Dark Times!

EmilyBemily:
-When everything has fallen out of place, who will remember me?
-When did you decide that short stories and comics just weren't enough for Emily?
-How did you build the plot of this novel?
-How do you feel about my recent school project where I turned Emily into Jane Eyre in order to bring the sense of gothic literature alive in the novel Jane Eyre?   hehe
-More questions to follow...

ROB the STRANGE:
It really hit me when I was reading a script for one of the short story comics-- Jessica had described sooooo much for each panel to be drawn, that it was IMPOSSIBLE to illustrate (animate maybe!), and then it hit me - the way in which she described the scenes didn't even need art-- her descriptions left what was going on and how it looked perfectly to one's imagination. And the idea to write a novel with her was born!

As far as plot goes, we brainstormed a number of ideas, all asking the question of "How do we introduce Emily to an entire new world of readers, while not making it boring or redundant for our current Emily afficianados?" My answer was that Emily has amnesia, and thus will be finding out who she is at the same time the reader does. and those of us who already knew she was Emily from the getgo, got to appreciate her frustration in not knowing who she was... really all the plots get bounced around several times until we land on something we consider to be worth digging deep into...

I met up with you in 2007 in s.f and got the trip out # 2 painting.! it took a while to get you to sign it . it seems like emily is taking strange by storm with movie upcoming soon and not to many original artwork shows i see now. are there going to be anymore ? i know you are extremely busy now but i miss the old skool days. hope and will be checking for an art show again in the bay area. hopefully minna gallery or your own now.
Big fan for 10+ years now,

Somer the Strange

ROB the STRANGE:
Hi Ghetto Stiletto!
We will for sure be having more Emily fine art shows. I think you are right about needing more of these. The art of Emily has always been a driving force -- visual creations to get lost in... I am guessing the next show in the Bay Area will indeed be at our very own Gallery Extraña in Berkeley. We have a closing party for our current show Masako Miki adn Chris Russell this Friday from 7-11. The Gallery is also regularly open now WED-FRI noon-6PM. we have lots of Emily original art there as well as some merch for sale. some of my non- Emily art is available as well. Hope to see you there some time!

-Did you listen to any music while working on the novel?

-If yes: What bands and songs in particular? Did any songs inspire you while writing the novel?

I'm probably going to come up with a few more questions...

ROB the STRANGE:

HI ShipWreckedBlue,

I always listen to music when i am creating- writing or painting or drawing... it keeps me going. I often listen to my own band, Thuja, (i know- how self centered can i get!) but really it's because it's very familiar and also ambient, dark, and the perfect mood for getting into Emily... I have lots of old punk, rock, and free jazz records that keep me going into the night...i am listening to all 4 sides of the Who's Quadrophenia right now...

The Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette is also a good one.

Bryony-Chan:

-I was wondering if this book will be available in Australia?
Thanks for your time.

BTW, big fan.

ROB the STRANGE:

YES!!!
Australia was the first foreign country to pick up the rights to the book! AND it should be soon, since they really didn't have to translate anything! i am guessing in time for the Holidays... I think there may still be some First Edition books available on our website too-- not sure though... Buzz? you out there?

thanks for your enthusiasm for Emily!

ROB the STRANGE:
Gracias! Espero realmente que ambos disfrutan de la obra. Es un paseo super divertido i pensar y la pasé muy bien trabajando en ello. Por favor, escriba de vuelta cuando haya terminado y háganos saber cómo le gustó!

EmilyBemily:
When everything has fallen out of place, who will remember me?
-What's your favorite band?
-Has your music taste influenced Emily's?

ROB the STRANGE:
This is always a TOUGH question... that's like asking Emily which cat is her favorite! The other 3 will kill her...

Here's a few of my faves for different moods: Van Halen (first album, especially Atomic Punk) for the retro jumping around mood, F***ing Champs for the techy shredding guitar moods that even Van Halen can't get me through, Social Distortion's Mommy's Little Monster for when i want to break stuff, the Stooges for when i want to take my shirt off, the Damned for when i need to transport to the dark side, Thelonious Monk- he gets the piano moving like no other, Funkadelic when i feel like visiting the Mothership, Frank Zappa for when i feel like laughing or making up silly songs, Bauhaus-- well you know, when i need some alone time...

The list goes on and on..... so many songs so little time!

Emily's music tastes are nearly identical to mine. hmmmm, how did that happen?

-When did you first decide that Emily would have a mother?
In the comics she doesn't have one, so I was wondering which one is canon.

ROB the STRANGE:

We decided Emily had a mom ages ago, but never really let it out of the bag until this book... we named her Patti as a tribute to Patti Smith... i always imagined that EMily had a mom in all the comics too- just didn't have her in there. Actually the first comic (#1) of Series 3 has her mom, Patti, in it... #2 out soon!

The paperback will have a few extra pages at the end that help connect the dots to the Emily community out there and to these SOS forum pages... a few new pieces of art Buzz created for those pages...

We are all Black Sabbath fans!!!!

Buzz will do an author talk for sure! we might even call it an illustrator talk.
